City cops write to Sewerage Board, contractor over N’palli scavengers’ death

Bhubaneswar: A day after two manual scavengers died of asphyxiation while cleaning a sewerage tank near Sapneswar temple IRC Village under Nayapalli police station, the Commissionerate Police today wrote to the Sewerage Board and the concerned contractor and sought to know the preventive measures taken by them while carrying out the cleaning operation.

On Wednesday afternoon, two persons identified as Bibhuti Nayak and Manas Nayak died of asphyxiation. They were residents of Badamba area in Cuttack district.

The mishap took place near Police Lines in IRC Village (Lane-4) area while the duo was engaged in cleaning and repairing the septic tank.

Sources said Bibhuti first stepped into the septic tank. After a few time, Bibhuti started screaming. Then Manas entered the tank to rescue him. As no sound came out from the tank for quite some time, locals informed the Fire Rescue officials who entered to the tank and found the duo fainted. They rushed the duo to the Capital Hospital where both were declared brought dead.
