Bhubaneswar: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has extended its support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee for President, Ram Nath Kovind.
Party president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik conveyed the party’s decision to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over phone. The decision was taken by Patnaik after consulting the party colleagues, sources said.
Earlier in the day, soon after the NDA’s decision to finalise the candidature of Kovind, the Prime Minister telephoned Patnaik and sought the BJD’s support to the candidate of the dalit man.
“Since a dalit person has been chosen for the President’s election, the BJD will support it,” said Patnaik.
Earlier in the day, Patnaik said that decision regarding BJD’s support to NDA’s President candidate and Bihar Governor Ramnath Kovind would be taken following discussions with senior party leaders.
The BJD has 28 MPs, including 20 Lok Sabha and eight in Rajya Sabha members besides enjoying support of another Independent Rajya Sabha MP. Besides, the party has 117 MLAs in a 147-strength Odisha State Legislative Assembly.
